The abundant resources of Iron ore, Manganese ore, Bauxite, Limestone, Dolomite, Chromites and Coal are being exploited throughout the country. The scientific and technological advancements in the last century has brought significant achievements in the development of a variety of metallic products in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering throughout the world, making use of mostly high grade ores to the maximum possible extent. With the passage of time high grade ores are getting exhausted and now time has come to exploit lean grade ores by developing new technically viable and eco – friendly processes/technologies. Usually at the sites of the mines, a lot of fines are being generated on continuous basis and bulk of these ore fines are still remaining unutilized. With the depletion of high grade ores it has become essential in majority of cases to exploit these ore fines for the production of value added products and the need of the hour is to develop suitable technology accordingly making use of the ore fines as well as lean grade ores.
In future, our country has to meet increased domestic demands of steel by exploiting lean grade ores and ore fines in iron and steel industries by using direct reduction/direct smelting process. These ore fines are being used in the form of pellets, sinter and briquettes which could not be utilized earlier. As far as urban ore is concerned, it includes anything which is reusable. Different kinds of urban ore, such as mixture of paper, glass, food remnants, plastic, rubber, metal etc. can be recycled by mechanical, chemical, thermal method or biological process. Today it is essential to find out fast solution of the urban ore problems and develop efficient and ecological safe system of recycling and simultaneously receiving useful products at the end of the cycle.
